These four routes take between two and four years, cost between very little and a great deal, and end in completely different places. Most students choose between them on the basis of what their marks allow and what their cousin did, which is how people end up three years into something they dislike.

B.Voc — the skill degree
Three years, any stream, built around doing the work rather than studying the theory of it. Roughly the larger share of credits go to hands-on skill training in a named sector, with the balance in general education and entrepreneurship. Exit points at years one and two mean no year is wasted.
Choose it if you learn practically, you want to be employable at twenty-one, or you already hold an ITI or polytechnic qualification and want a degree that builds on it rather than restarting.

B.Tech — the engineering degree
Four years, PCM at class 12, and an entrance exam — JEE Main for the national institutions, state CEEs, or institutional tests. Heavy on mathematics and engineering theory, with laboratory and project work.
Choose it if engineering is what you want to do, you are comfortable with mathematics at that level, and you can commit four years and the associated cost.
Do not choose it if you dislike mathematics. This sounds obvious and yet it is the single most common reason students struggle in the first two years. Four years of it is a long time.
A word on the cost. B.Tech is the most expensive of these four at private institutions, and the market is crowded. An engineering degree from a weak institution with no placement pipeline is a poor investment compared with a well-taught B.Voc in a sector that is hiring. Judge the institution, not the degree name.
B.Sc — the science degree
Three years, science stream at class 12. Theory-led, laboratory-supported, built as a foundation rather than a destination.
Choose it if you want research, teaching, or a postgraduate route — M.Sc, then a PhD or a teaching career. Also if you are heading for competitive examinations where a science background helps, or for professional courses that build on a B.Sc.
Do not choose it if you intend to work immediately after graduating and have no plan for a master’s. This is the honest weakness of a general B.Sc: on its own, three years after class 12, it does not qualify you for a specific job. Most B.Sc graduates need something after it. Plan that something before you start, not in your final semester.
Diploma — the polytechnic route
Three years, entry after class 10 or 12. Applied technical training in civil, mechanical, electrical, computer or allied engineering, qualifying you for technician and junior technical roles.
Choose it if you want to be earning quickly in a technical trade, or if you want a cheaper, less competitive route into B.Tech — lateral entry puts diploma holders directly into the second year of an engineering degree, which is a genuinely efficient path.
Do not choose it if you need a degree qualification specifically, since a diploma is not one. And be clear that the technician ceiling is real without further study.
The three questions that actually decide it
Forget which sounds most impressive. Answer these.
How do you learn? If you have spent twelve years finding theory a chore and practicals interesting, that is real information about you and you should act on it. B.Voc and diploma are built for that. B.Sc is not.
When do you need to be earning? If the honest answer is “as soon as possible”, B.Voc and diploma are designed for it, B.Tech is workable, and a general B.Sc is the weakest of the four. If you can afford to study until twenty-three, that changes.
What does the job you want actually require? Look up five real vacancies for the work you imagine doing and read the eligibility line. It will name a qualification. That is your answer, and it takes twenty minutes to find.
Can you switch later?
Yes, more than people assume, and it is worth knowing the routes.
Diploma to B.Tech — lateral entry into year two. Well established and widely available.
B.Voc to M.Voc or MBA — straightforward, since B.Voc is a bachelor’s degree.
B.Voc to a conventional master’s — accepted by many departments, restricted by some. Check the specific department in writing.
B.Sc to almost anything — the most flexible starting point academically, which is its real strength.
B.Tech to management or IT — extremely common. Many B.Tech graduates never practise engineering.
Nothing here is a life sentence. But switching costs years, so try to choose properly the first time.

Is B.Voc equal to B.Tech?
